How to plug into the Power of Prayer
Matthew 6:9 – 13
9 “This, then, is how you should pray:
“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,[a]
but deliver us from the evil one.[b]’
Acts 12:5
Acts 12:5 (KJV) Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.
This evening I would like to look at how we can use the Our Father prayer as a guideline for our prayer life. Now this teaching is more for those that are new, because as we go into this time of prayer and fasting, you may not have developed your prayer life yet.
Now there are some of us that have been around for a while and this may also benefit from this teaching. Once I am done we are going to spend some time in prayer.
Let’s take a look at how we can use the Our Father prayer as a guideline to
establish our prayer life.
Matthew 6:9-13
9 “This, then, is how you should pray:
9 – “‘Our Father in heaven,
In this day and time it was unlikely that a Jew would call God Father, because it was considered too intimate, but how many know even though He is creator of they universe, set the stars in place, and is all Powerful and Reigns on high we can still call Him Father?
I think it is important to note that Jesus didn’t say my Father, but He said our
Father. So that means we as the people of God, when we enter a time of prayer we can go to God as our Father.

10 – your kingdom come,
Kingdom: Father let me remember that it is all about Your Kingdom. Let me
decisions be focused on building your Kingdom and not my own desires.
Your will be done –on earth as it is in heaven.
Will: Father help me to be submitted to Your will today. Not my own will, but Your will. Help me to be obedient to what you would have me to do.
Let Your will be done in my attitude.
Let Your will be done in my schooling.
Let your will be done in my decisions.
Let Your will be done in my Family.
Let Your will be done in my Job.
Let Your will be done in my relationships.
Let Your will be done in my life.
As children of God our desire should be to see the will of God done on earth( in our
lives) as it is done in heaven.
Jesus not only taught us how to pray Father Your Will be done, but He also
modeled it for us.
When He was facing the cross His Flesh may not have wanted to go to the cross, but Jesus said the prayer of Father not My will but Your Will.
That should be our prayer Father help me not to do my own will, but I want to glorify Your Name, build Your Kingdom and do Your Will.
11- Give us today our daily bread.
Our Daily Needs:
Isn’t Amazing that we serve a God who created the stars and the heavens, yet He is still concerned about meeting our daily needs.
Whatever those needs may be.
Even though they may seem small to us, they matter to God.
Maybe your family is in a tough situation financially and you don’t have any money for electricity, water or food.
You might be only one saved in your family. As a Child of God you can ask God to meet that need. Nothing is too small or too big for God.
When God comes through you can be a testimony of how God answers prayer when your family sees how God can come through, with our daily needs because of your prayers.
Even though we serve a big God, there is nothing too small for God.
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
Forgiveness: How many here are thankful that we can come to God and ask for forgiveness of our sins.
No matter what we have done, what we have said or what we have thought. The bible says I John 1:9 – If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
How many ever needed the forgiveness of God?
How many are grateful that no matter what it was God forgave us?
Then not only do we have forgiveness, but the prayer also challenges us to be forgiving.
It says “as we also have forgiven our debtors” isn’t it amazing how we like receiving forgiveness, but it is hard to give it out.
Some of us can treat forgiveness like money, it is easy to receive it, but we go through changes when it is time to give it out.
There maybe some of us here tonight who are holding grudges on people for what they did.
Now would be a good time to forgive.
God desires that you and I are a forgiving people, we should be willing to forgive just like we have received forgiveness.
Matthew 5:23 – “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there
remember that your brother or sister has something against you,
Matthew 5:24 – leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.
13 And lead us not into temptation,[a]
but deliver us from the evil one
Last but not least: Strength in the face of temptation
God can give us the strength when we face times of temptation. He can give us the strength when we are feeling weak.
As the people of God we should have a prayer life.
So when we go to school, work, with family and friends our prayer should be.
Father help me not to be lead into temptation.
Help me to stand strong for you.
No matter what my friends are doing, no matter what the world is doing and no
matter what my family is doing.
God help me to stand for you at school, at home, at university, at college, at my job and wherever I go.
