Compliments, Comparison, and Calling

Judges 6:11-14

Compliments, Comparison, Calling

11 - And there came an angel of the Lord, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

12 - And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him, and said unto him, The Lord is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.

13 And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the Lord be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt? but now the Lord hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.

14 And the Lord looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?

Comparison- Gideon could have determined his effectiveness by comparing himself to others.

How many times have you and I determined our success by comparing how well we performed to the performance of others?

Quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson

“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.”

Quote: Be Yourself
“ Be yourself everyone else is taken.”

BThat is the way the world operates. Many people determine if they are effectiveness by comparing what they are doing to others.

Now in a competition that is understandable. We judge our effectives or how well we did by what place we came in, if we won the game or if we out did the person we were competing against.

Let me ask another question:

How many times have you and I determined our effectiveness of what we did for God by comparing it to others?

In the kingdom of God, it is a little different. We shouldn’t determine our success or effectiveness of what we did by comparing it to what others did.

We should determine our effectiveness according to what God has called us to do.

How well are we accomplishing the vision or goal that we feel God has placed upon our lives.

Let me give you an example:

We just got finished with our Run 4 Hope and my goal was to run the 5k without stopping. Now my goal wasn’t to win the race, but my goal was to finish the race.

So, I had to go at very slow pace. I had to go at a pace that I could not only start the race, but I wanted to run the whole way without stopping and I wanted to finish the race.

Now if my goal was to win the race then I lost, but if my goal was to run the whole way and finish the race then I accomplished my goal.

Too many times you and I do things for God and our success is compared to what others are doing, but the goal for you and I should be to accomplish what God has called us to do.

I would like to encourage you this evening don’t determine your effectiveness for God by comparing it to the actions of someone else.

Quote: Life Is Easier

“Everything in life is easier when you don’t concern yourself with what everybody else is doing.”

Gideon could have said well Lord I know I am running from the Midianites but compared to what everybody else is doing, I am on the move.

After all everyone else is camped out but at least I am threshing wheat.

At least I am busy at the whine press.

At least I come to G.A.N.G.

At least I help when I can.

At least I am doing more than brother so and so or sister so and so.

If Gideon would have determined his effectiveness in what God had called him to do by comparing it to what other where doing, he could have missed out on the call of God upon his life.

Tell your neighbor, just do what God has called you to do.

Compliments – Gideon could have determined his effectiveness by the compliments he received.

Gideon was complimented by the Angel as he was threshing wheat in the wine-press. The Angel told Gideon he was a mighty man of valor.

Remember Gideon was on the run and threshing wheat in a wine-press, then suddenly, the Angel shows up and calls him a mighty man of valor.

He could have taken that compliment and said yes, I am awesome, I am the man, and I am doing great things for God, but we also need to remember Gideon was on the run from the Midianites.

Now being that Gideon received the compliment he could have let the compliment keep him in a place of comfort.

Now let me get this straight I love compliments and I am not against them, as a matter of fact, I love giving compliments to people I think it is a good thing to do.

If you hang around me long enough, I will probably tell you I am proud of you, man you are doing a great job, I love you, I appreciate you, you’re the bomb and so on.

So, I love giving compliments and I think it is a great thing to do.

Quote: Here is a quote for you

“Compliments are free, yet so hard for some people to give”

Have you ever met someone who doesn’t give compliments to people, but they love tearing people down?

On the flip side, have you ever met someone who has a hard time receiving compliments?

Have you ever met someone who only gives compliments to people, when it benefits them?

So, my point is this compliments are free and I think we should give them, but you and I need to be careful that we don’t let the compliments of people get us comfortable in what we were doing when we received the compliment.

Gideon could have taken that compliment and become comfortable in what he was doing, he was threshing wheat in a winepress, but the compliment was meant for him to see who he was and to encourage him to go after all that God had for him to do.

The compliment was meant for him to go to the next level.

Tell your neighbor don’t get comfortable in the compliment.

Quote: Compliments
If we are out to seek compliments, then we will avoid the criticism.

Quote: Compliments by Timothy F. Cahill
I take compliments and I take constructive criticism. Not everyone loves you. It's the way you react as a footballer. I use it all to make me play better.

Calling – Gideons effectiveness was when he went after the call of God upon his life.

Gideon didn’t let comparison or compliments sidetrack him from what God had called him to do.

The run we are in is not against our brother or sister. It is not against the church up the street. It is not against the person you don’t like. The race that you and I are in is to fulfill the call of God upon our lives.

When you and I determine if we did what God called us to do, it shouldn’t be compared to what other people did, it shouldn’t be compared to what other people said about us, but it should be compared to what God has called us to do.

If I can encourage the G.A.N.G. tonight. God has so much for you.

Go for what God has called you to do.

Don’t compare your effectiveness to someone else’s calling.

Don’t determine your effectiveness by what other people are saying about you whether good or bad, compliments or criticism.

God has called you to do something that only you can do, and I just stopped by to encourage you to go for all that God has for you.
