“He Keeps on Calling Me.

I Samuel 3:1
1 The boy Samuel ministered before the LORD under Eli. In those days the word of the LORD was rare; there were not many visions.

2 One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place.

3 The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the house of the LORD, where the ark of God was.

4 Then the LORD called Samuel. Samuel answered, "Here I am."

5 And he ran to Eli and said, "Here I am; you called me." But Eli said, "I did not call; go back and lie down." So he went and lay down.

6 Again the LORD called, "Samuel!" And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, "Here I am; you called me." "My son," Eli said, "I did not call; go back and lie down."

7 Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD: The word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him. ...

8 A third time the LORD called, "Samuel!" And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, "Here I am; you called me." Then Eli realized that the LORD was calling the boy.

9 So Eli told Samuel, "Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, 'Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.' " So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

10 The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, "Samuel! Samuel!" Then Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant is listening."

This morning I would like to speak a message entitled “He Keeps on Calling Me.”

In this passage of scripture that we just read we see in verse 1 that Samuel was ministering before the Lord under Eli.

Now what is interesting to me is that in verse 7 of the same chapter it says Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD.

My question is, how can Samuel be ministering before the Lord and not know the Lord?

After I really looked at it, I guess there is a difference between before the Lord and unto the Lord.

I guess that confirms that you and I can be in the House of the Lord, but not have a relationship with the Lord.

Something powerful happened in verse 10, it says The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, "Samuel! Samuel!"

What I like about this portion of scripture is that even though Samuel was in the House of the Lord and didn’t know God, yet God still called Samuel by name.

This shows us that God had a calling on Samuels life.

Even though Samuel was in the House and didn’t know God, God still called Samuel by name.

What is interesting is that Samuel was lying down when the Lord called him. He was in a place of falling asleep.

What I get from that is sometimes you and I can be in the House of the Lord, but we can be spiritually sleeping.

We come to church and go through the church motions, but are spiritual lives are lying down and almost sleep.

We are faithful in our attendance to church, but our prayer life is sleeping.

We are faithful in our attendance to church service, but our involvement is lying down and almost sleep.

We come to church and minister to the Lord in our songs, but our word life is nonexistent.

If you find yourself in that condition this morning, I am here to tell you that God still has a calling on your life.

As a matter of fact, He is calling you by name.

Tell your neighbor “ He keeps calling me.”

Mark 16:7 -
Now go and tell his disciples, including Peter, that Jesus is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there, just as he told you before he died.

The Angel sent a message on behalf of Jesus to tell the disciples and Peter to meet Him in Galilee.

Now there is something that should be noted here, this was after Peter had denied Jesus.

So even though Peter had denied Jesus the Angel still called Peter by name.

How many are grateful that even though we have shortcomings, even though we make mistakes and even though we don’t have it all together, God still call us by name.

The Angel made special notice of Peter. Why would the Angel do that?

Maybe Peter was feeling like a failure.

Maybe he was wondering if God could still use his life.

Maybe Peter wasn’t hanging out with the disciples anymore.

Peter could have been in a place where he was wondering if God still wanted to use his life.

Even though Peter had failures and shortcomings God still called Peter by name.

How many are grateful that the call of God does not depend on our righteousness?

It doesn’t depend on us having it all together.

The Bible says you have not chosen me, but I have chosen you.

John 15:16
You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit--fruit that will last--and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.

Here is a quote from Charles Spurgeon

“If any of you have behaved worse to your Master than others, you are peculiarly called to come to him now. You have grieved him, and you have been grieving because you have grieved him. You have been brought to repentance after having slidden away from him, and now he seals your pardon by inviting you to himself.” (Spurgeon)

There may be someone here this morning that finds yourself like Peter.

You are in a space where your decisions have you far from God and you are wondering if God can still use you.

I have good news. God is still calling you by name.

Can I talk a little bit about myself?

Even in my inadequacies He keeps on calling me.

Eve in my doubts He keeps on calling me.

Even when I wonder if I have what it takes, He keeps on calling me.

Even when I don’t do the right thing or say the right thing, He keeps on calling me.

John 11:41-43

41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father,I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.”

43 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face.

Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”

Here we have a situation where Lazarus was in the tomb and he had already been there for 4 days.

Lazarus was in a situation where there was no hope.

Even though people seen no hope for Lazarus.

Even though the world seen no hope for Lazarus.

Even though Lazarus didn’t see any hope for himself, Jesus showed up on the scene and calls Lazarus by name out of the grave.

Tell your neighbor “He keeps on calling me.”

How many are grateful here this morning that God calls those that may be sleep in the temple?

How many are grateful this morning that God calls those that don’t have it all together?

How many are grateful here this morning that God calls those whose situation may look hopeless?

How many are grateful that even though we may have found ourselves in a situation that looked hopeless, God still called us by name.

The world may have given up on you.

The system may have given up on you.

Your best friend may have given up on you, but God showed up and called us by name.

I wish I had somebody here this morning that is grateful that Jesus showed up on the scene and called you by name.

You may have been sleep in the temple, but God still called you by name.

You may have made some mistakes felt like you let God down, but God still called you by name.

You may have felt like your situation was hopeless and there was no way out, but God showed up and called you by name.

I have some good news for someone here this morning.

You may find yourself in the House of the Lord and you are spiritually sleep, but God is calling you.

You may feel like you let God down and wonder if God can still use you, God is calling you by name.

You may find yourself in a hopeless situation where everybody has given up on you, God is calling you by name.

He keeps calling me.

Can I encourage myself a little bit this morning?

No matter the situation or the circumstance I find myself in, God keeps calling me.

In the midst of my inadequacies and short comings – He keeps calling me.

When it looks hopeless and like there is no way out – He keeps calling me.

When people may have given up on me – He keeps calling me.

When I may have given up on myself – He keeps calling me.

When it looks to me like God has chosen the wrong person – He keeps calling me.

When I don’t feel like answering the phone – He keeps calling me.

The Bible says in Romans 11:29
For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.

This tells you and I that no matter what we have done or where we have been, God will not change His mind about what He has called us to do.
There is nothing that you and I can do to make God change His mind about the calling that He has for us.

If God has called you, then that calling remains. The bottom line is that God will not give up on us.

“He keeps calling me.”

There may be someone here this morning that feels like you have missed the call of God, but I want to encourage you that the call of God is still going out.

Put up picture here.

Play sound clip.

This morning you may find yourself in the house of God, but you are spiritually asleep. The call of God is going out to you this morning.

This morning you may find yourself in the house of God, but you feel like you have let God down. I am here to tell you that God is calling you by name and the call of God is still going out.

Just like God called Peter by name He is calling you.

This morning you may find yourself in a hopeless situation and wonder if there is any hope for you. I am here to tell you that God is calling you by name and the call of God is still going out.
