[Mat 20:29-34 NIV]

29 As Jesus and his disciples were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed him.

30 Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard Jesus was going by, they shouted, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”

31 The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”

32 Jesus stopped and called them. “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked.

33 “Lord,” they answered, “we want our sight.”

34 Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him.

Have you ever wanted to step out and do something, but you were told it couldn’t be done?

Have you ever wanted to step out and do something for God and you were told it couldn’t be done?

Here is a little poem I came across entitled “It couldn’t be done” by Edgar Guest:”

Somebody said that it couldn’t be done,
But he with a chuckle replied
That “maybe it couldn’t,” but he would be one
Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it.

Somebody scoffed: “Oh, you’ll never do that;
At least no one ever has done it”;
But he took off his coat and he took off his hat,
And the first thing we knew he’d begun it.
With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin,
Without any doubting or quiddit,
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it.

There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,
There are thousands to prophesy failure;
There are thousands to point out to you one by one,
The dangers that wait to assail you.
But just buckle in with a bit of a grin,
Just take off your coat and go to it;
Just start in to sing as you tackle the thing
That “cannot be done,” and you’ll do it.

This morning I came to preach to those who want to accomplish something in life, but you are being told it can’t be done.

Note: If you want to also check out my blog on Give Me My Mountain you an check that out here.

This morning I came for those who want to do something in life, but the situation is telling you it can’t be done.

This morning I came for those who want to step out and do something in life, but your finances are telling you it can’t be done.

If I can encourage you this morning, I would like to say, don’t let the crowd stop you.

If I can encourage you this morning, I would say, don’t let the lack of finances stop you.

If I can encourage you this morning, I would say don’t let the situation stop you.

If I can encourage you this morning, I would say don’t let what people are saying stop you.

Speaking of not letting what the people say stop you, I would like to read a pretty funny story I came across entitled “An old fable of a Donkey”

An old fable of a Donkey

In old fable that has been passed down for generations tells about an elderly man who was traveling with a boy and a donkey.

As they walked through a village, the man was leading the donkey and the boy was walking behind. The townspeople said the old man was a fool for not riding, so to please them he climbed up on the animal’s back.

When they came to the next village, the people said the old man was cruel to let the child walk while he enjoyed the ride. So, to please them, he got off and set the boy on the animal’s back and continued on his way.

In the third village, people accused the child of being lazy for making the old man walk, and the suggestion was made that they both ride. So the man climbed on and they set off again.

In the fourth village, the townspeople were indignant at the cruelty to the donkey because he was made to carry two people. The frustrated man was last seen carrying the donkey down the road.

When you and I try to please people, we will always come up short.

There may be some of us here this morning who have a desire to do something and the crowd is telling you to be quiet.

The crowd is telling you, what are you even trying that for?

The crowd is telling you; I know how prideful you are. You are trying to do that because you want the glory.

There may be some of us here this morning that are trying to do something that we haven’t ever done before and it may not be going how you planned. The situation is not what you imagined, but don’t give up.

Keep going after what you feel God has placed in your heart.

You may be in one of 3 places:

  • You are wanting to step out, but the crowd is saying you can’t do it.
  • You are in the middle of stepping out and the situation is tough, and you may be getting a little discouraged.
  • You stepped out, and it didn’t go as planned and now you are not stepping out anymore. You gave up on the vision.

If the blind men would have listened to the crowd, they would not have received their sight.

If the widow woman would have let her financial situation stop her from stepping out, she wouldn’t have received the overflow.

If the Gideon would have let his situation stop him from rising up, he would not have been used by God to make an impact.

If David had listened to his brother Eliab, he would not have defeated the giant.

Sometimes you and I can let what people say stop us from stepping out and doing what God has called us to do.

Sometimes you and I can let our finances hold us back from doing what we desire to do.

Sometimes you and I can let our situation hold us back from doing what we believe God has placed in our hearts to do.

Speaking of situation, finances and people holding us back. Check out some of these people who didn’t let situations hold them back.

Quote from Today in the word, August 1990  – Thomas Edison

It is said that Thomas Edison performed 50,000 experiments before he succeeded in producing a storage battery. We might assume the famous inventor would have had some serious doubts along the way. But when asked if he ever became discouraged working so long without results, Edison replied, “Results? Why, I know 50,000 things that won’t work.”

You think that is deep check out this one about Thomas Edison and the Light Bulb

Thomas Edison is by far one of the most famous inventors in history. He holds 1,093 patents to his name. However, when attempting to invent a commercially-viable electric lightbulb, he failed over 10,000 times. When asked by a reporter how it felt to fail so many times, he merely stated, “I have not failed 10,000 times. I have not failed once. I have succeeded in proving that those 10,000 ways will not work. When I have eliminated the ways that will not work, I will find the way that will work.”

Quote Colonel Harland Sanders

Colonel Harland Sanders was the late founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) restaurants. Throughout his entire life, he failed in just about every endeavor he was involved in. However, at the age of sixty-five-years old, he set out with his famous chicken recipe and only a $105 social security check to his name, in an attempt to sell his franchise chicken model. 1,009 restaurants rejected him before one accepted his offer.

Quote Sylvester Stallone

Stallone’s young-adult life was incredibly tough. At one point, he was homeless for three weeks, living in the New Jersey Port Authority bus station. He was also so broke that while writing the script for Rocky, his electricity was turned off and he was forced to sell his dog for $25 just to turn the lights back on. He was also rejected by talent scouts over 1,500 times

In this day and age, we need some more world shakers.

In this day and age, we need some more history makers.

In this day and age, we need some more mountain movers.

In this day and age, we need some more trail blazers.

Why do we need world shakers, history makers, mountain mover and trail blazers?

Because there is a hurting world that needs to know about the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

There are university students looking for an answer.

There are drug addicts looking for an answer.

There are hurting families looking for an answer.

There are teenagers looking for an answer.

There are Mommies and daddy’s looking for an answer.

There are gang members looking for an answer.

We have not been called to be average, but we have been made to do good works and glorify God.

Ephesians 2:10

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Stepping out for the first time.

There may be some of us here this morning that have a desire to get involved in a particular area of ministry, but the crowd is telling you, ah, don’t do that.

I encourage you to go for it.

There may be some of us that want to tithe for the first time, but the crowd is saying, don’t do it, but I encourage you to go for it.

There may be some of us that want to start a business, but the crowd is saying don’t do it, but I encourage you to go for it.

There may be some of us here this morning who want to go to the U.T.C., but the crowd is saying don’t do it, but I encourage you to go for it.

There may be some of you who want to get your matric, go to university, get your learners, or get your license and the crowd is saying, don’t do it, but I want to encourage you to go for it.

You stepped out

There may be some of us who are in school, in university, in college, running a business, leading a bible study or you are studying and the crowd is telling you to give up.

The crowd is saying you don’t have what it takes, but I stopped by to tell you keep at it.

Your finances are not enough but keep going to class anyway.

The situation is tough but keep pressing on anyway.

You are in the middle of stepping out and the crowd is trying to sidetrack you, but keep going for what God has placed in your heart.

You have stopped pursuing your dream

There may even be some of us here this morning who has stopped pursuing our dream.

You have let the crowd stop you from pursuing your dream.

You have let the situation stop you from pursuing your dream.

You have let the finances stop you from dreaming.

I stopped by to encourage you. Get that dream back. Get that vision back.

Get back to studying.

Get back running that business.

Get back to leading that bible study.

Get back to going to class.

Get back to being involved in that ministry.

Yes, you may have had some setbacks, but its time for a comeback.

Yes, the situation may have been tough, but you are going to be like Gideon and come out from the winepress and do what God has called you to do.

You may have given up, but you are going to be like Peter and make a comeback.

I just wanted to stop by and encourage someone step out, take a risk, get back in there and see how God will come through.

Quote: Tim Hansel, Eating Problems for Breakfast, Word Publishing,1988, p. 32.

“One of the reasons why mature people stop growing and learning,” says John Gardner, “is that they become less and less willing to risk failure.”
